A lasagna garden: a technique for building new garden beds in which layers of organic matter are piled on each other, lasagna-style. The first layer is usually cardboard or newspapers to prevent any grass from invading the bed. Then compost, leaves, manure, straw, and any other organic matter at hand are added in successive layers. The garden can be planted immediately but it's even better to build it in the fall to give the layers time to break down into a fine organic humus before planting in the spring.
